SETTLERS OF SILICON VALLEY

Grohe Online Conversion

In the Valley of the Heart’s Delight,

where you can harvest bountiful crops

and your dreams…

General Note:  Largely S of SV follows standard rules, Settlers of Catan with 5-6 player expansion.  The board is fixed, however, like Settlers of the Stone Age, with a Peninsula between the ocean and the Bay.  Game begins as usual with each player placing 2  “apartments” and 2 “highways”…

Revamped Terminology

¬    Settlement à Apartment

¬    Road à Highway

¬    Longest Road à Longest Highway

¬    Robber à Landlord

¬    Soldier à  Protester

¬    Largest Army à Largest Rally

Gleaning Resources:  Higher Income

¬    An apartment on any resource will earn 2 resources.

¬    A city will earn 4 resources.

Building Requirements:  Much Higher Cost of Living

¬    Building 1 apartment requires 4 times the resources:  4 bricks, 4 logs, 4 wheat, 4 sheep.

¬    Building 1 city requires 2 times the resources:  6 rocks, 4 wheat.

¬    Note:  Don’t worry!  It’s do-able, plus there are other ways to reap points. J

New Development Cards

¬    Venture Capital (2 cards) ~ “Collect any 10 resources of your choice from the bank.”

¬    Stock Options (3 cards) ~ “Trade any 2 resources for 6 resources of your choice from the bank.”

¬    Earthquake! (2 cards) ~ “Earthquake hits!  You can destroy any 1 apartment, reduce any 1 city to an apartment, or destroy any 2 highways on the board.”  (Allan’s long dreamed of this variation =)

¬    Recall (3 cards) ~ “The Governor is recalled.  You lose 1 victory point.”  A single player can only suffer the effects of 1 Recall per game.

New Resource Hexes & Cards

1) Silicon Chips

¬    5 silicon chips = 1 computer

¬    Computer: each computer added to an apartment = .5 victory point (multiple computers allowed – every household needs at least a couple, yes?!)

2) Spice

3) Sugar

¬    1 Spice & 1 Sugar = 1 treat

¬    Wonka-ization: 5 treats buys 1 Chocolate Factory = 1 victory point

4) Puppy Dog Tails

5) Snails

¬    1 Puppy Dog Tail & 1 Snail = 1 pet

¬    Quality of Life:  5 pets buys 1 Happiness Marker = 1 victory point

Additional Resource Challenge:  “Shooting the Moon”

Special Note:  If choosing the following option, players can opt to place resources #2 – 5 listed above face down in front of them to save them.  These resources are then exempt from being stolen or lost for any reason, including the greed of the Landlord, a strike from a Protester, or the roll of a 7.

The Option:  The first player to collect 23 in any combination of Sugar and Spice cards, or collect 23 in any combination of Snails and Puppy Dog Tails cards, can add a baby to 1 apartment.  A baby is worth 8 points.
