words within

snow falls outside my window
a world you do not see
tears chill my cheeks

spring revels in ocean city
lifeguard stands at night
we know every storefront on the boardwalk
closed out of season

                                              teasing slumber away with nudges
you chide with eyes i nestle into
                                              then kissing my fingers
                                              we return to sleep
                                              lazy and lost

                                              sandcastles
drip drip we add another spire
summer rain catches us chasing the bus up asbury
with soggy laughs we wave it on
                                   too late for dinner tonight

the world withdraws
and ticks clock the hours by

           asphodel and lilac
                      stark
among the red yellow and green still
                                                      falling from trees

           lend you a rainbow's grace

i go down to the sea
winter's fog masks the sand
waves roll
                      dull and incessant
