Commentary:
Prior to the Greyhawk Wars the Mayor and Directors kept the militia’s
identity tied strictly to the Free City. The arms for all units where
the same, see fig. 1,
no matter where they were stationed. Be it the city walls, a keep
near the swamps to the east, or along the roads of the domain. This
was part of a systematic process of removing militia soldiers ties
to their home towns or homesteads and make the city their focus. After the Greyhawk Wars the Free City found itself in control of
a very large domain with hostile forces bent on its destruction in
almost all directions. There was a sudden need for a real military
that could project power beyond old borders. They also saw the need
to instill pride in their newly acquired lands, Hardby, Safeton,
Narwell, the Abbor-Alz Mountains and Cairn Hills. This was realized
with the creation of the Hardby Marines, Safeton Borderers, Narwell
Headhunters and the Mountaineer Militia.
The Directors also realized they needed to increase the size and
morale of their core militia units. Thus, while keeping the basic
design of the original Greyhawk Militia arms, they added the unofficial
badges to the arms for each type of unit to distinguish them on the
open battlefields they found themselves on. Fig. 2 is the infantry
arms, fig. 3 is the archers, and fig. 4 is the calvary.
