Bellport[1] (or Belport)[2][3] is a coastal city on the Solnor Ocean and a major port in the northern part of the North Kingdom, built into the Blemu Hills, near the border with the Bone March. The city, which is sometimes called "Grey Steel" due to the stone used to construct it [4], is exceptionally important to trade.[5].
History
[edit | edit source]The city has a navy and a reasonably sized fishing fleet, but those are destroyed in raids from the north by the Fruzti, sometime just before 585 CY. The navy is left with only two seaworthy galleys, and a third which is damaged but repairable.[5] Over half of the entire fishing fleet is sunk, with most of the survivors too terrified to go back out on the water. Attacks from the Fruzti in Fireseek 585 CY also kill off another of the city's key defenses—one of the blue Corusk war dragons who are charmed by mages and are trained and ridden by plate-clad warriors.[4] That, combined with the two dragons who are previously lost in a war with Nyrond leaves only two such dragons as part of the city's defenses.[4] The threat of future raids also leads Patriarch Halldrem, who is the leader of the city at the time, to impose curfews and strict crackdowns, especially since there are orcish raiders attacking lands to the southwest of the city,[4] which started after the destruction of Greenkeep in Sunsebb of 854 CY[6].
Cityscape
[edit | edit source]The city is partly known for its walls, which are 45' feet high with the main gate facing the sea and made from hard grey stone quarried from the hills. They are strong enough to withstand most sieges.
People
[edit | edit source]Demographics
[edit | edit source]Over half of the defenders of the city in 585 CY are Rakersmen who are often at odds with the humanoids who are also defending the city. It is a constant source of tension, because they are forced to work with them, and there is a great deal of resentment from citizens.
Notable individuals
[edit | edit source]Grimkun Threehand, whos right hand has three fingers after he lost two, is the leader of the orcs who are garrisoned in the city. He is allowed to attend city council meetings because his forces are largely responsible for maintaining law and order. Threehand often takes the Patriarch's chair when he is absent.[5]
Government
[edit | edit source]Bellport is the governmental seat of the Principality of Bellport.[7]
Economy
[edit | edit source]Resources
[edit | edit source]There are electrum mines near Bellport.[8] The mines are worked by slave labor and are quite dangerous, especially Horgren's mine, which suffers from frequent flooding and sink holes. [4]. There are also two slate quarries to the northwest of the city which are worked entirely by zombies, with no living beings allowed in the quarries themselves. They are heavily guarded by orcish garrisons.[4].
Trade
[edit | edit source]Most of the provisions for the city come from Luvern because the land directly to the south of Bellport is mostly barren.[5]
Rumors and legends
[edit | edit source]One of the electrum mines is called Pyre because the rock formation found above the mine resembles an old tribal funeral pyre. There are rumors the mine has an old curse laid on it.[4]
