Axebeaks are tall and aggressive flightless birds.[1]
Description
[edit | edit source]Axebeaks get their name from their sharp wedge-shaped beaks. They have strong necks and powerful legs, which they use to sprint at high speeds.[1][2]
Abilities
[edit | edit source]Axebeaks are faster runners than most horses[3][note 1] and can carry as much as a horse of similar size.[4]
Behavior
[edit | edit source]Axebeaks are aggressive hunters and usually hunt during daytime. They are always prone to attack any unfamiliar creatures which approached them.[1][2]
Combat
[edit | edit source]The main natural weapon an axebeak uses in combat is its heavy and sharp beak.[1][2]
Ecology
[edit | edit source]Axebeaks can be raised as guards, hunters, and mounts."[5] In the plains surrounding Xamaclan, there are "small farms and domesticated herds of [common animals]... as well as unusual creatures such as axebeaks. which are valued for their meat and plumage."[6]
Axebeaks are most commonly found in hills and grasslands.[7] They are common to the environs of Xamaclqan especially the Polahecu grassland.[8]
Flocks of Axebeaks also can be protective of their young, rushing to its aid in case of danger.[9]

[edit | edit source]- ↑ In v3.5 rules, both axebeaks and horses have the Run feat, which allows them to move five times their normal movement speed over flat, even terrain, but axebeaks have a speed 5 higher than that of a light horse. Thare calculates to 34 mph (55 km/h) for the horse and 37 mph (60 km/h) for the axebeak, though some exceptional horses may run faster.
For comparareon, in the real world, some horses can reach speeds of over 50 mph (80 km/h), but v3.5 consistently gives lower maximum speeds for animals, likely because the Monster Manuals include representatives of average specimens.
