Baranford is an important river crossing town in Furyondy on the Velverdyva River. It is a major shipping river port, and the majority of the trade coming down from Highfolk on the river goes through here. It is also a major river ford, between the Carnalion Mines and Chendl.[1]

Geography

[edit | edit source]

Baranford lies within the Duchy of the Reach in the northwestern extreme of Furyondy, on the Velverdyva River at the foot of the Vesve Forest.

Chendl lies aproximately 180 miles east, overland, and Highfolk lies about 150 miles almost due west, up the Velverdyva River.[2]

Travel

[edit | edit source]

The river ford is only closed in spring "when seasonal flooding raises the river too high."[1]

The Royal Highway runs from Chendl to Baranford and from there on westward to the Carnalion Mines. It is patrolled by the King's Riders based in Baranford.[1]

People

[edit | edit source]

Population

[edit | edit source]

In the aftermath of the Greyhawk Wars, Baranford grew only slightly (10%) from 585-591 CY (2,000 to 2,200 total pop.)

Demographics

[edit | edit source]

While the majority of Baranford is human, being so near Highfolk brings many elves to the area, and there is a significant population of high elves and elves in the town.

Because Baranford is a trade hub, many adventurers come on their way to either the Highvale or the Yatils or Clatspurs[1]

Religion

[edit | edit source]

Notably, in addition to other common deities worshipped culture, there are small temples for the worship of Corellon Larethian and Solonor Thelandira.[1]

Languages

[edit | edit source]

As the community is predominently human and a trade hub, Common is found everywhere in Baranford. The elven folk of the town also means Elvish is found being spoken frequently.

Government

[edit | edit source]

Military

[edit | edit source]

For a town it's size, Baranford boasts a significant militia, equal to about 10% of the population., about a quarter of whom are royal "advisors".[1]

Economy

[edit | edit source]

Trade

[edit | edit source]

Baranford is a very important trade center in the region. Many merchants live here becaus the Carnalion Mines require a distribution center, and the merchants center themselves where the trade happens. Merchants even come from miles around, occasionally as far as Perrenland.[1] The mines provide almost the entirety of Furyondy's gold reserves. Because the mines are almost directly on the border, the revenue from the mines are divided between the crown, Duchy of the Reach, and the Barony of Littleberg, as well as state of the Highfolk, by an "ancient agreement."[1]

A tax is paid at Baranford on trade coming down the Velverdyva River passing through the river port. It is typically levied vary by size of the ship, but is charged per vessel. There are also tolls on roads in the area, though these are much more affordable.[3]

Because of the possible attacks from dangerous humanoids from the Horned Lands, the Veng River isn't typically used for trade in the 580s and 590s CY, mercantile goods and other trade must go overland from the northeastern provinces westward to Chendl and on to Baranford to get ships and commerce to the Nyr Dyv.[3]
