Contents

[edit | edit source]

The Dungeons & Dragons Gazetteer details the lands of Greyhawk, the third edition core world of Dungeons & Dragons.[2] The book's introduction specifies "this is the core world for D&D game products … The D&D game setting is located on the sphere of Oerth, most specifically on the continent of Oerik, in its easternmost portion called the Flanaess."[2] The book then goes on to briefly cover the history of the region, as well as present an atlas which provides a short description of the most important kingdoms.[3] There is also a chapter on geography, and a listing of some of the most influential groups in the region.[3]

  • Chapter One: The World of D&D
  • Chapter Two Timetable of History

Publishing history

[edit | edit source]
Alternate RPGA cover of the D&D Gazetteer (2000).

In 1980, D&D co-creator Gary Gygax released the World of Greyhawk Fantasy Game Setting, a 32-page gazetteer of Gygax's World of Greyhawk. This was updated several times over the next decade. After TSR almost went bankrupt, when Wizards of the Coast acquired TSR and developed a third edition of D&D, the company published a new Gazetteer in 2000 using the same 32-page format originally used by Gygax twenty years previously.

The Dungeons & Dragons Gazetteer was written by Gary Holian, Erik Mona, Sean Reynolds, and Frederick Weining, with cover art by Sam Wood and interior art by Justine Mara Andersen.

A special, limited edition of the D&D Gazetteer was given to RPGA members at the time of publication. It has a different cover, designed to emphasize the RPGA's use of the product and differentiate it, but the contents are identical to the commercial version.

Reception

[edit | edit source]

Merrick Blackman, on RPGgeek, said the D&D Gazetteer is "the perfect product for a DM who wants to run a generic D&D campaign, who wants the basics of a world, but doesn't want to be drowned in detail. The descriptions of the nations give brief histories and political notes, and the entire thing works extremely well with the D&D 3E game."[4]

In Issue 24 of the French role-playing magazine Backstab, Cyril Pasteau noted that 32 pages was not enough to "synthesize a universe as vast as that of Grehyawk." Pasteau concluded, "Unfortunately, there is not enough material for a beginning gamemaster to build their own campaign."[5]
