Great Northern Crusade
The Great Northern Crusade.was an ambitious military action aimed at regaining land lost to Iuz during the Greyhawk War.[1]
Lead up to conflict
[edit | edit source]In 585 CY, after the Great War, King Archbold III of Nyrond was poisoned by his son Sewarndt, but his elder son Lynwerd triumphed and took the throne in early 586 CY. That same year, Canon Hazen of Veluna used the Crook of Rao to banish most fiends from the Flanaessin an event called the Flight of Fiends, freeing vast lands for resettlement. Soon after, chaos erupted in Rauxes when priests of Hextor declared Overking Ivid V deposed. The city was consumed by a mysterious magical catastrophe and remains warped and dangerous. The fallen Great Kingdom splintered into two rival powers: Grenell's Kingdom of Northern Aerdy and Xavener's United Kingdom of Ahlissa, both struggling with internal strife and economic hardship.
Outbreak of war
[edit | edit source]In 587 CY, King Belvor III of Furyondy and Canon Hazen of Veluna launched the Great Northern Crusade to reclaim lands lost to Iuz. By 588 CY, after a major turning point in the war at the Battle of Grabford, they had retaken much territory, including Critwall, and declared eternal war against Iuz. Meanwhile, the Scarlet Brotherhood’s power began to collapse—rebellions in Onnwal confined them to Scant, and a brutal civil war in the Hold of the Sea Princes in 589 CY further weakened their influence across the Flanaess.
Outcome and aftermath
[edit | edit source]As Furyondy’s armies advanced north, the Scarlet Brotherhood's power declined. Onnwal rebelled, confining them to Scant, and a bloody civil war erupted among their monks in the Hold of the Sea Princes by 589 CY. Though the Brotherhood’s master gained influence in the southern jungles, their control over the Flanaess collapsed.
