Description
[edit | edit source]Appearance
[edit | edit source]Norbelos' entirely white hair makes her age readily apparent, as does her clear fragility. Her evocative blue eyes show every bit of her considerable intelligence. As she has advanced in years, Norbelos has become more infirm. Due to her low strength and constitution, she has difficulty even getting around and make State appearances, resorting to using magic to bolster herself. Her regality and grace are evident when she does so, and she carries herself with the elegance of a noblewoman.
Personality and alignment
[edit | edit source]Religion
[edit | edit source]Abilities
[edit | edit source]Slavers (second edition):
- Str 6, Dex 10, Con 9, Int 18, Wis 13, Cha 14[1]
In third edition (and 591 CY+), Norbelos' INT was raised to 19, and her CHA rose to 16. This does not appear to be from third edition's use of age modifiers for abilities, because no other stats (STR, DEX, CON) were simultaneously lowered. Nor does she use any magical items which affect those ability scores.
- Str 6, Dex 10, Con 9, Int 19, Wis 13, Cha 16[2]
Home
[edit | edit source]As Despotrix of Hardby, Norbelos has made her home at the Palace of the Gynarchs for over 30 years, and she is likely to have been born in Hardby.
Possessions
[edit | edit source]At varying points, Ilena has owned or used: ring of spell turning and robe of eyes.[1][2] In addition, she has had bracers of armor +4 and a ring of protection +3.[3].
She has also been depicted as having either a ring of human influence (2e)[1] or circlet of persuasion (3e),[3] but these are simply similar magic items in different editions serving as a mechanical replacement to achieve the same ability of magically swaying or impelling people.

[edit | edit source]History
[edit | edit source]Norbelos has been the Despotrix since she was elected in 566 CY[4] and was Despotrix when the Pomarj slavers were originally taken down in 580 CY and played a role in the taking down of the reformed slavers in 591 CY. Since the Domain of Greyhawk took control of the city of Hardby in 582 CY, due to the start of the Greyhawk Wars, her role has been reduced to that of a figurehead, though she still wields great political power.
In Coldeven 586 CY, Norbelos was encouraged by Tenser and took part in the banishing of demons from the Flanaess at the "Striking of the Crook of Rao" in a wizardly casting which supported the divine event. She was discouraged from doing so by Rary the Traitor.
In Living Greyhawk
[edit | edit source]| This section contains content from the Living Greyhawk organized-play campaign. |
Beginning in 586 CY, Norbelos' health began declining. By 591 CY, serious concern had begun to grow about her frailty and her continued rulership over Hardby.[5]
In 597 CY, adventurers "provided a potion which kept the ailing Despotrix alive long enough to participate in a crucial vote. Days later she died, and was replaced by Deirdre Longland, a strong proponent of alliance with Greyhawk."[6]
Publishing history
[edit | edit source]Ilena Norbelos appeared in the Slavers adventure by Chris Pramas (1998).
She was given a very lengthy profile (and stats) in Living Greyhawk Journal #1, (Spring 591 CY, 2000) in "Playing Pieces: The Despotrix of Hardby" by Fred Weining. She was also discussed at length (and her stats repeated) in "Hardby: City of the Scorned" as part of the intricacies of the political scene in Hardby.
