History

[edit | edit source]

The famous Suloise tome Slerotin's Manifesto by Slerotin was kept in Safeton from 441 to 524 CY.[2]

The Night of Terror

[edit | edit source]

An enormously tragic act of fear and racism occurred in the towns along the new southern border of the Domain of Greyhawk, where the Orcish Empire had invaded northward and decimated the Wild Coast during the Greyhawk Wars. "Early in 584 CY, every orc, half-orc, and hobgoblin in Narwell and Safeton was knifed, lynched, or burned alive by the humans of the towns for fear they might be Pomarj spies."[3]

People

[edit | edit source]

The peoples of Safeton are surprisingly diverse, spanning a wide range of alignments and races, including an above-average population of demi-humans. The only folk disallowed are those known for evil deeds.[1]

Population

[edit | edit source]

The population was 4,600 in 576 CY.[4] It grew steadily to 5,500 by 585 CY.[5] It continued this trend, hitting 6,100 by 591 CY.[6] It remained that size in 597 CY.[citation needed]

In Scourge of the Slave Lords, which takes place sometime between 577 and 581 CY, the population is 1,000.[1][note 1]

Feast of Edoira in Safeton

[edit | edit source]

In Growfest each year, the people of Safeton celebrate a unique variation on the Feast of Edoira. Elsewhere, the holiday lasts only a single day, but the festivities here span a full week. In 581 CY the Feast of Edoira was a "major town event", but by 591 CY, "only one church in Safeton still celebrates."[11]

When Dame Gold hosted a festival in observation of the holiday at her estate, Windy Crag, the week's itinerary was very organized:[12]

Day one—Derish held a solemn religious service in the morning; reprieve in the afternoon; dancing and a grand banquet in the evening
Day two—Mitgan gifted a statue of Edoira to the Temple of Safeton in the morning; bards began the recitation of an epic poem at a small dinner banquet in the evening; a moonrise party at night
Day three—A mock naval battle with magical fireworks in the midday; a meal of exotic seafood at sunset
Day four—Morning prayer service; afternoon picnic; a dance in the evening
Day five—Games in the garden starting in the morning
Day six—The Grand Feast (served outdoors) lasts late into the night
Day seven—No events, attendees depart

The following holidays and celebrations take place during the celebration:[12]

Government

[edit | edit source]

The city is under the rule of a military governor, Turin Deathstalker, appointed by the Domain of Greyhawk.

Safeton earned its name and reputation through strict adherence to the processes of law and order.[1]

Realm

[edit | edit source]

The city was previously the capital of the Holdings of Safeton, but is now under the rule of the Domain of Greyhawk under a Pact of Association signed in Coldeven 584 CY to gain military protection from the Domain against the Orcish Empire of the Pomarj.[13]

Heraldry

Economy

[edit | edit source]

"Fishing, trade, laboring, quarrying, and mercantile seamanship are the sources of income here, but life is hard for most."[14]

Upon entering Safeton, most travelers would have to pay a toll of one silver piece, which was collected as a tax to support the various guilds of the city.[1]

Military

[edit | edit source]

Sometime between 584 and 585 CY, Turin Deathstalker was appointed Commander of the Safeton garrison by the Domain of Greyhawk.[15]

In 585 CY, the Hardby Marines kept a war galley stationed in Safeton, to protect it and further monitor the Woolly Bay.[16]

In Legends of Greyhawk

[edit | edit source]

In the Legends of Greyhawk campaign, Safeton and the surroundings were used as the staging ground for the premier adventures of the Wild Coast region by West Coast Adventurer's Guild at Dice Online Games (October 10-12, 2025).[17]

The adventures take place in the summer of 576 CY. Safeton has a big market at Midsummer Day [18] drawing visitors trading wares and rumours from the other settlements in the North Wild Coast, such as as Narwell, Zulern, Phlandish and Newtemple. Lord Protector Wolstan take the opportunity to seek someone to take over after the retirement of healer Aeldwyn One-Arm.
