Balabar Smenk is a wealthy and ambitious mine manager in Diamond Lake.
Description
[edit | edit source]Smenk is a corpulent,[1] bald man.[2] Though few will oppose him, he is defined as a "paragon of corruption."[3][1] He wears a personal cologne that is an "odious needlefolk extract from the distant south."[4]
Personality
[edit | edit source]Smenk is a ruthless and unrepentant thug. Sly and conniving, he uses threats, bribery, intimidation, and violence to achieve his goals. His demeanor is smarmy and overindulgent, and most usually condescending to others, especially those in his employ. He is not above mocking people behind their backs or behind closed doors.[1]
Smenk's "hook" catchphrase, used to exemplify his personality is "Don't you know who I am?" [5]
Possessions
[edit | edit source]Smenk resides in Diamond Lake, in a "sodden old mansion"[4] on the southeast side of town, about 100 yards from the shoreline.[6] It was a handsome home in the late 490s CY, but hasn't been maintained and is wholly run-down,[4] belying his efforts at self-aggrandizement. Bizarrely, he keeps three dire apes chained to rails on the walls of the manor as a means of defense and security.[4]
Relationships
[edit | edit source]Mestal Fixx is Smenk's personal assistant and right-hand man, but he goes missing in 595 CY,[7]
There are three hired thugs patrolling Smenk's property at all times, which means there are at least 6 to 9 of them working shifts. He has thugs in his pay as far away as the Free City.[8]
He also has several indentured criminals "employed" in his service as hired muscle and lackeys.[9]
- Kullen (NE male half-orc Bar3)—an towering, hulking brute; albino;
- RastophanN male human Rng2)—wiry and laconic; "from the southern swamps"
- Todrik (NE male human Ftr2)—born indentured; angry red vertical scar on entire left side of face
- Merovinn Bask (NE male human Wiz2 [Enchanter])—bitter and permanently cross; forced into indenture due to debt
- Filge (NE male human Wiz3 [Necromancer])—hired by Smenk to do research in the Age of Worms.[10]
History
[edit | edit source]Smenk has been slowly gathering up mining claims from competitors that have gone into bankruptcy, purchasing their patents for coppers on the gold piece. He currently owns at least four mines in the Diamond Lake area. He also owns several local businesses.
Rumors and legends
[edit | edit source]Balabar is the subject of much gossip due to his famously bad taste and love of excess.
It is rumored that he has powerful connections in the city of Greyhawk. It is said by many of the inhabitants in Diamond Lake that Smenk owns almost everyone and everything in the town. Most people in Diamond Lake believe he has the town sheriff Cubbin on his payroll. Those who aren't already on his payroll, he can pay off to get his way. Those he cannot pay off tend to disappear.
