Bampton is a port town in the County of Urnst.[1]

Description

[edit | edit source]

Bampton is a port town in the Field Barony of Bampton that is part of the Archbarony of Vinewind.

History

[edit | edit source]

Bampton was founded by the infamous pirate Jester Jac-O'-Six and his wife, Agayle Desponde, who initially sought gold from Flannish ruins along the shores. After clashing with Aerdi Kingdom troops, they vowed to reform and paid off the Aerdi with stolen gold while secretly hiding much of it by collapsing cliffs over the ruins. Though overshadowed by Radigast's large port, Bampton remains an established port on the Nyr Dyv. In recent years, a large number of Rhenee have moved into the area, filling the streets and waterways.

One of the Five Standing Stones (monoliths) was in the caves by the South Lighthouse near Bampton where a vampire, his spawns, and some doppelgangers once lived.[2][3][4]

Geography and climate

[edit | edit source]

Bampton is located on the Nyr Dyv and south of Radigast City.

People

[edit | edit source]

Population

[edit | edit source]

The mostly human population of Bampton is 1980 in 592 CY[5] and increased to 2640 in 595 CY when large group of Rhenee moved into the waterways and town. This is likely due to Baron Gwydion Reineer's engagment to Papusza (female human(Rhennee) Expert2).[6]

Religion

[edit | edit source]
  • St. Cuthbert - The temple is led by Father Culwadden (male human Clr11) and is the main religious leader of Bampton. He has been a part of many campaigns and is considered reliable if a bit cantankerous. He is also good friends with Baron Reineer.[7] The temple itself is a stout stone edifice near the waterfront, a short distance from Lost Lovers Beach. Its solid masonry stands in sharp contrast to the surrounding weathered wooden buildings, giving the structure a severe, almost martial presence. The Rhenee of the town are notably absent from the nearby streets, conspicuously avoiding the neighborhood around the temple altogether. Tall, narrow exterior windows—more akin to arrow slits than panes—pierce the walls. Set with thick, cloudy glass, they allow only a distorted glimpse of the interior. A small, reinforced door at the rear of the building remains bolted from within, and the temple’s compact footprint suggests that no living quarters exist on the premises. Inside, the sanctuary is square and unadorned. Long benches of dark hardwood serve as pews, facing a simple matching table at the front that holds several lit candles and neatly arranged prayer books. Above the altar, a starburst of deep red glass dominates the wall, its muted light casting a solemn, unwavering presence over the space.[8][9]
  • Phyton - a small temple has recently been built here.[10]
  • Procan - Sandy Rathborn (male Clr) maintains the shrine and often on the bay helping fisherman and others on the water.[7]
  • Xerbo - This temple is led by Nokya Geeherts (female human Clr8) and stands near the docks, surrounded by the rough life of the harbor. Grizzled, surly sailors, both merchantmen and naval hands, loiter nearby, drinking down their allotted rations while waiting for the next tide or posting. Gulls wheel overhead and rats scurry along the wharves, drawn by refuse and scraps, while the air hangs heavy with the reek of sewage dumped into the nearby bay. Adding to the district’s unsavory character, prostitutes linger along the edges of the temple grounds and adjoining streets, openly vying for the attention of drunken sailors. It is a place where faith, vice, and the hard realities of life at sea exist side by side, as inseparable as the docks and the waters they serve.[11][12]

Notable locations

[edit | edit source]
  • Bloody Hot Forge - is the premier blacksmith and armorer in Bampton, run by Pjorfe (male half-ogre, half-dwarf Ftr1/Wiz11) renowned for his skill and integrity. Pjorfe marks all his swords with a simple "P" on the pommel, a signature recognized across the city.[7][17][18]
  • The Den - Headquarters for the Rogue's Guild, the Sea Serpents.[19]
  • The Docks - The docks are on the southern side of Bampton, along the Way of LIght road and consist of Mistral's Gate Pier, Fishmongers Carnival, Procan's Pier, Major Trader's Gate Pier, Minor Trader's Gate Pier, Shipyard Pier, and Mummer's Pier.[20]
  • Headless Hydra inn and tavern-The Headless Hydra stands as Bampton’s premier social gathering spot, a three-story inn and tavern that draws locals and travelers alike. Its proprietor, Haree Kormeer (male half-eff Brd13, won the establishment from its previous owner nearly a decade ago in 582 CY, and under his care, the inn has flourished. The tavern comfortably accommodates 80 patrons at tables, with room for another 20 at the bar. The inn offers 20 guest rooms and a common room that can hold 16 guests comfortably, or up to 32 in a pinch. Meals range from hearty fish chowder to roast mutton and a variety of other daily offerings, depending on what’s available. Beds and bunks are meticulously maintained, ensuring a relatively vermin-free, restful stay. Entertainment is a cornerstone of the Headless Hydra, reflecting Haree’s own bardic talents. Visitors may enjoy harp players, singers, or panpipe performers, with the lineup changing day to day. True to the inn’s long-standing tradition, patrons can earn a free drink by sharing a compelling tale that delights those around them—a practice affectionately known as “An Ale for a Tale.” The building itself is among the grander in Bampton, well-maintained with a comical hanging sign above the entrance depicting a hydra juggling its own severed heads, a playful reflection of the inn’s name and lively atmosphere. Under Haree Kormeer’s skillful management, the Headless Hydra remains a vibrant heart of the town’s social life.[7][21]
  • Lost Lover's Beach - Also known as Abigall Beach, it is in the northern most section of shore in Bampton Bay and has been converted to a multi-colored maze-like tent town by the Rhennee.[22] Vadoma the fortuneteller (female human(Rhenee) Sor5/Vetha3) has a tent here selling fortunes for 10GC.[23]
  • Marimon’s Emporium of Unique Thaumaturgical Devices - This shop sells scrolls and is located within Market Park.[24]
  • Market Park- Vendors from several nations and Rhenee craftsmand fill the stalls and tents that are set up haphazardly on the grass and shop-fronts in the buildings around its perimeter. [25] The Eagle Guard maintains a heavy presence here.
  • North Lighthouse - Sits on the northern enterance to Moridan's Hammer Bay and maintained by Sansen (male human Com3).[26]
  • Obsidian Conclave - The conclave has a chapter house in the city particularly for members that specialize in Abjuration magics.[27]
  • Old Lighthouse - Many years ago, Shandara Flaxen was found dead, her body shattered on the jagged rocks below the Bampton Light Tower. That night, the beacon had mysteriously gone dark. Though fog blanketed the shore, the Light Keeper, Jeb Pelin, roused by the disturbance, managed to relight the flame before any ships, few though there were, came dangerously close to the rocky coastline. Suspicion initially fell upon Shandara’s lover, Gillion Trent, who was believed to have pushed her. But when authorities went to question him, they found Gillion dead as well—no visible wounds, no clear cause, and a look of sheer terror frozen on his face. In the years that followed, at least twenty-three bodies have been discovered at the base of the tower, each found after nights of thick fog. Legend holds that Shandara’s restless spirit haunts the old lighthouse, luring young men to their deaths with seductive whispers. Yet the most mysterious aspect of the tower remains its flame, which has never extinguished—even after repeated acts of vandalism destroyed the lantern room and the oil reservoirs ran dry. A more modern lighthouse, South Lighthouse, has since been built nearby, and the old tower has fallen into ruin. Over time, it has become the subject of countless ghost stories, often told to ensure children obey their parents. Notably, no deaths have occurred near the old light in over seven years, though the tales of Shandara’s ghost continue to chill the imagination of Bampton’s residents.[7] The town hermit, Demas Kaartac (male 1/2 elf Ftr7 LN) lives near the ruins in a hut with 3 sea hags, who will remain peaceful as long as no one attacks them or Demas as they enjoy looking beautiful for him.[28]
  • Reineer Keep - Also known as Bampton keep, the keep and its lookout towers, watch over the town from the north, Baron Gwydion Reineer resides here.[7]
  • Rooster on the Bull Inn-Second only to the Headless Hydra in prominence, the Rooster on the Bull is one of Bampton’s most familiar social gathering places. In recent years, the inn has developed a distinctly “locals only” atmosphere, a reaction to the steady influx of dockworkers, Rhenee, and naval sailors passing through the port. Located not far from Market Park, the Rooster on the Bull is a shabby, somewhat neglected establishment whose worn appearance belies its popularity with longtime residents. Locals often joke that it should be called the “Cock and Bull,” a nod to the exaggerated sea stories and tall tales traded nightly by sailors and old-timers alike. The spacious ground floor is devoted entirely to food and drink, where conversation is loud and laughter common. The upper floor houses the inn’s boarding rooms, offering simple accommodations for those who know the place well—or know better than to ask too many questions.[29]
  • Shipyards of Bampton - located on Shipyard Pier on the docks, as a major port founded by pirates that now services Radigast City, the shipyard have grown into a major lay-off port when repairs and refitting of damaged or aging ships become necessary. The Bampton Shipyards is renowned for its expert handling of standard repairs and refitting tasks and have ready access to virtually all products and services that apply to the respected profession of the Shipwright. The fact that this particular profession was originally forged by necessity as a result of the life of a pirate only lends credence to the generations of Shipwrights that have made their life the care and repair of thousands of ships that have visited Bampton over the years[7]
  • Shrine of Procan - maintained by Sandy Rathborn.[7]
  • South Lighthouse - Recently built to replace the ruin old lighthouse and sits on the southern entrance to Moridan's Hammer Bay
  • Temple of St. Cuthbert - The temple is a stout stone structure near the waterfront, not far from Lost Lovers beach, though the Rhenee seem to avoid the place. The temple is run by Father Culwadden.[9]
  • Temple of Xerbo - This old temple is mostly constructed of weathered, moss-covered, stone is located near the docks and is run by Nokya Geeherts.[11]
  • Wyvern Tooth Imports-This smithy is located in Market Park[24]
