The Cairn Hills March, in the western Duchy of Urnst, is one of four marches on the outer edges of the duchy. It is named for the Cairn Hills, known for the numerous Suloise burial sites in the area.[1]
Description
[edit | edit source]While cairns along trade routes have been fully explored, many hidden ones remain in the unexplored regions. The area is economically vital due to its trade routes and rich mining industry, with caravans transporting gems, ores, and foodstuffs.[1]
Mining towns, primarily inhabited by humans and gnomes, with some dwarves and halflings, are common, though abandoned mines outnumber active ones. The Cairn Hills serve as the only overland route from Greyhawk to the east, making them strategically crucial.[1]
History
[edit | edit source]In 584 CY the Cairn Hills Treaty ceded the eastern Cairn Hills to the Domain of Greyhawk to defend the region in safekeeping for the Duchy. The treaty ended in 597 CY, being made null and void, returning the area back to the Duchy.[2]
Geography
[edit | edit source]Settlements in the region include the county seat, Blarco (town) at Castle Blarco, and Storaven. Smaller settlements include Koffel, Lunis and Veriste.[3]
Resources
[edit | edit source]Some of the local mines produce various ores and gems, including: coal, amber, flint, agates, opals, and quartz.[4]
