Edge Field (or Edgefield) is city in the North Kingdom, right at the eastern edge of the Adri Forest [1], which is ruled with an iron fist by a Naelax prince who was turned into an animus by Ivid V. The city itself is mainly built of wood from the Adri Forest, along with stone from the Blemu Hills for some of the more prominent structures,[2]

History

[edit | edit source]

When His Grace Grenell seceded from the Great Kingdom, Prince Halstern of Edge Field was quick to provide support, mostly because he was upset Ivid V had him turned into an animus. That support included the humanoid divisions in his army, comprised of euroz orcs and orcs from the Adri Forest, which he kept separated, and an elite squad of bugbears, also from the Adri.[2]

The city is exceptionally wealthy, and a large part of that comes from the destruction of the Bone March. When refugees fleeing from Knurl arrived in the city, Prince Halstern set up a tax on any belongings they brought with them to fill the city coffers.[2]

Cityscape

[edit | edit source]

The city is a walled city, and the main gate in the stone walls features large bronzewood shields that display Prince Hastern's heraldry. The walls have trebuchet and ballistae as defenses, which Hastern has manned by ogres. He also has weapon smiths who make chain leggings and breastplates for the ogres, both for practical purposes, and because it makes them look more menacing, which is effective in scaring the people of the city, to help prevent trouble.[2]

There are a few buildings of note in the city. One is the dweomertorium, which has a glassteel cupola that is instrumental in the study of astrology by the few resident mages.[2] One such mage is the designer of Rostanna's House of Pleasure. The building is hemispherical, meant to mimic the shape of a galda fruit, and is full of strange enchantments.[2] These include talking doors, magically enchanted constructs and serving platters of unique design for the banquets, and couches that are capable of tickling those who reline on them as expertly as any courtesan."[2]

The other notable buildings are inside a walled off compound which includes the cathedral to Hextor, Hastern's keep, and the city jail.[2] The jail is known for being well built and difficult to escape, in part due to the magical barriers and extra wards, and is often used to house bandits captured while fleeing the Imperial troops for the safety of the Adri Forest. Prisoners might also be subject to the maze, which was under construction in 585 CY. The maze is a twisting labyrinth of thorny hedges that has areas with distance distortion and other such spells cast on it to make navigation more difficult. The real danger, though, likes in the many hazards such as hangman trees, kampfults and other monsters. Hastern has a floating bower that he likes to sit in the magically hovers above the maze so he can watch the prisoners struggle, using his specialty crystal ball.[3] Early in the construction, there were cases where plant monsters escaped by night to terrorize the denizens of the city, but that was before the final barrier spells were places on the outer walls.[3]

Notable individuals

[edit | edit source]

A preceptor of The Midnight Darkness named Phlandarn Reshelfer uses the city as his home base, who is widely regarded as the most dangerous man in town.

Religion

[edit | edit source]

Like most of the former Great Kingdom, the people of Edge Field worship Hextor,[2] as his worship was the offical state religion in the decades leading up to the Kingdom's dissolution.

Government

[edit | edit source]

Hastern rules the city with an iron first, ruling mostly through fear. He also controls the land around the city, though his grip on out lands is not as strong. "The exact southern border of his lands is challenged by both Prince Strychan of Dustbridge and Countess Ishell of Rikerstone,"[2] with the Countess is a liegewoman of Prince Montand of Delaric. Hastern's method of dealing with these disputes is not diplomacy; he holds that practical control is the real decider of such disputes, and so he has raiders harass those living there, though always in such a way that he himself has plausible deniability.[2]

Heraldry

[edit | edit source]

The Edgefield coat of arms is blazoned thus: "vert, a griffin rampant gules."[2]

Economy

[edit | edit source]

Resources

[edit | edit source]

The city sends raw resources as tithes to the Overking rather than directly paying taxes. The resources it's known for include wood from the Adri Forest, along with slaves and gold taken in raids his soldiers mount, both from the city proper, and from surrounding militia camps, the most notable of which is Grerrkadenk.[2]
