"Ferrond" or the Viceroyalty of Ferrond (also seen as "Old Ferrond"[1][2][3] or "Western Nyr Dyv")[2] is a place from an older era. It does not exist as a contemporary nation in 576 CY and forward. It is a historical term referring to a region of the Flanaess where the successor states of the Viceroyalty of Ferrond now lie; it was a former province of the western reaches of the Great Kingdom. It is a shorthand way of saying "the old area which now includes various modern nations, but used to be called 'Ferrond'".
History
[edit | edit source]Ferrond was prominent in the second century CY and early third century CY. The nation remained from c.100 CY to 254 CY, but with the death of Viceroy Stinvri, nobles "installed Stinvri’s heir as Thrommel I, king of Furyondy."[4]
Geography
[edit | edit source]Old Ferrond was expansive, spreading "from the Clatspur Mountains to the Nyr Dyv, from the Lortmils in the south to the far shores of Whyestil Lake, and beyond, in the north."[5]
It includes "Furyondy, Veluna, Verbobonc, Dyvers, and the Shield Lands."[1]
Government
[edit | edit source]The Viceroyalty of Ferrond was a vassal state of the Great Kingdom of Aerdy, ruled by a viceroy in the name of the Overking. The capitol of the Viceroyalty was the city of Dyvers, [6] which is now its own city-state.
Administrative Divisions
[edit | edit source]The Viceroyalty of Ferrond consisted of the modern-day states of Furyondy (Furyon), Highfolk, Perrenland (the Quaglands), the Shield Lands, Veluna (Voll), and the hilly regions northeast of the Vesve Forest, known then as part of the Northern Reaches.
In Legends of Greyhawk
[edit | edit source]| This section contains content from the "Legends of Greyhawk" organized-play campaign. While it is officially published, and is approved by WotC, this content is based on the DMG 2024, and may differ from earlier publications. |
"Realms of Ferrond" is used as a region in the Legends of Greyhawk campaign by one of the Premier Organizers, Baldman Games, as the name of one of the regions they administer for the campaign. The region was used in the campaign's preview events in 2025, which included the Battle of Emridy Meadows and adventures in Verbobonc, in Hommlet, Nulb, and at the Moathouse, but the region was not referred to as the "Realms of Ferrond" at the time. The region was announced in November 2025 and planned to premier at Winter Fantasy 50 2026 (Feb 4-8).[7]
For LoG puposes, the region includes Veluna, Furyondy, and Verbobonc. Highfolk is a separate region, used primarily for monthly online events like their "Virtual D&D Weekends" (VDDW). Perrenland and the Shield Lands are only used for story elements, rather than as organizational regions.
The official website for the campaign includes a regional page for Ferrond, as well as individual subpages for individual nations, regional primers, and "Things You Know".[8] (See External Links, below).
