Innspa is a city and province of the Great Kingdom before the Greyhawk Wars, later a province of the United Kingdom of Ahlissa. The city's name comes from the bubbing springs in the Flinty Hills, baths, and all the hostels, taverns and inns found there.

History

[edit | edit source]

Innspa began as a small Aerdy mining village, first under the auspices of House Cranden, and later purchased by House Garasteth. Over several centuries, the city developed into a center of trade and tourism, becoming cosmopolitan and welcoming to all species. Goods traded through Innspa included ores from the Flinty Hills, food from Nyrond, timber from the Adri Forest, and fish from the local tributary of the Harp River. During this period, it was variously part of Nyrond, the Prelacy of Almor, and the North Province.[1]

In 322 CY an eccentric wizard built a set of ornate public baths in Innspa, heated by a bound fire elemental. The baths and drinking water of the city are filled with water drawn from the Flinty Hills and delivered to the city via a series of aqueducts of gnomish design.[2]

In approximately 550 CY, Innspa became the personal fief of Prince Corazell of House Garasteth.[1] Taking the title of Lord Mayor, he maintained Innspa’s at least nominal loyalty at the time to the Prelacy of Almor.[3]

Beginning in 583 CY, the Greyhawk Wars disrupt Innspa’s security and economy. The countryside is thrown into chaos, causing inflation and shortages, and nearly eliminates the city’s economic base of trade.[1] At the Battle of Innspa in 584 CY, Nyrond utterly routs the Aerdy forces.[4] The aftermath of the battle leaves the area in turmoil, however, and soon thereafter Prince Corazell dies without an heir.[1]

In 585 CY there is therefore no effective leader with power over Innspa’s full territory. The city itself and a small amount of surrounding land supporting its population of 10,500 are controlled by Countess Karasin, Corazell’s widow. The northern lands of Innspa’s territory are held by orcs from the Bone March, and the western lands are loosely controlled by rag-tag remnants of the former Great Kingdom’s army[1] who fight amongst themselves.[5]

In 590 CY, Countess Karasin proclaims Innspa’s fealty to the United Kingdom of Ahlissa[6] and by 591 CY, the population of Innspa grows to 12,200.[7]

Cityscape

[edit | edit source]

Innspa is not a walled city—its "old town" is walled with the rest of the city built around it. Most houses are built of stone, and many reveal the handiwork of dwarven or gnomish stonemasons—though demihumans are very rare here now. The old town houses about 2,500 people, and contains Karasin's palace, the barracks of Levialen's Innspa Regiment, and the richer, skilled workers and petty aristocracy of the city. Rulership is high within the old town, medium elsewhere. In the aftermath of the Greyhawk Wars, goods are expensive (cost multiplier 180%) and are often in short supply.

Innspa has two exceptional features. One is the series of stone aqueducts of gnomish design which bring fresh water from the Flinty Hills. The other is the splendidly ornate public baths with their idiosyncratic bill of fare: a quick swim and bathe in the "tepid water" baths costs only 1 cp. For the aristocracy, 2 gp buys a foaming hot water bath with herbal infusions and allegedly medicinal mineral salts together with all the hot towels and soap one can use. They were built in 322 CY by an eccentric wizard obsessed with personal hygiene, and the fire elemental he bound to heat the waters is still at work here.

It also has many religious buildings from small shrines to cathedrals.
