The Prelacy of Almor, often simply referred to as Almor and sometimes as Old Almor, is a realm of the eastern Flanaess destroyed by the Great Kingdom in the Greyhawk Wars.
History
[edit | edit source]Almor is originally a clerical fief of the Kingdom of Aerdy. However, Almor became more powerful and independent as the Great Kingdom slid into decadence and weakness.[1]
Ivid I assumed the Malachite Throne in return for granting greater autonomy to various provinces of the Great Kingdom, notably Medegia, Rel Astra and Almor.[2]
In his old age, King Dunstan I the Crafty of Nyrond saw the Great Kingdom had survived two civil wars, and that Ivid I had entrenched his rule. With the threat of internal strife and external enemies in Harvester 450 CY he called the Great Council of Rel Mord.[3][4] Delegates from every Nyrondal principality and subject state attended, as did representatives from Almor, the Iron League, the Duchy of Urnst, and the Domain of Greyhawk. After a month and a half of negotiation, Nyrondal troops are to withdraw from the Theocracy of the Pale and the County of Urnst, and internal borders realigned. Almor also gained independence.[5]
In about 575 CY combined Nyrondel-Almorian forces moved into the lower Bone March and captured Knurl. This, along with incursions by humanoids across the Teesar Torrent into the North Province, led to a punitive force of mercenaries being dispatched in retaliation. However, the force is defeated in the hills above Belport, leading to Herzog Grenell seeking Imperial funding of a large army to recapture the southern Bone March.[3]
In 576 CY Almor is essentally a buffer state between Nyrond and the Great Kingdom, with Nyrond paying to support Almor's standing army.[1]
In 579 CY reacting to increased militarism by the Great Kingdom, Nyrond, Almor, and the Iron League band together to form the Golden League which fights the War of the Golden League over the next 2 years, and drains both sides financially and militarily to no real outcome.[5]
In 583 CY, as part of a widespread attack against various realms[6], Ivid's Northern Army converges on Innspa and Almor seem certain to fall before the might of the Glorioles regiments. King Archbold III amasses the largest force in Nyrond's history in response, leaving crops to wither in the fields and bandits free to roam. As 583 comes to a close, Nyrond signs the Eastern Pact of Alliance with various allies in Oldred to ensure the containment of Ivid's armies, but due to Nyrond's many "heresies", the Theocracy of the Pale refused[7] to assist under the Pact.[5]
Almor is utterly destroyed by the Great Kingdom in the Greyhawk Wars.[8]
In 586 CY the Great Kingdom collapses when rivals for the Malachite Throne, including Duke Szeffrin, attack Rauxes after hearing news Ivid V is no longer overking. Rauxes is ruined and disappeares into a region of distorted and unpredictable magic.[2]
In 587 CY King Lynwerd of Nyrond incorporates much of ruined Almor into his Kingdom, as far south as the Harp River.[9]
Geography
[edit | edit source]Borders
[edit | edit source]The easternmost territory of Almor is defined by the southern arm of the Flinty Hills. The portion of the Flinty Hills covered by the Adri Forest (west of the Harp River) is within Almor.[10] The northwestern tip of the Adri Forest, west of the Harp River which includes part of the Flinty Hills, is part of Almor.[11] The mouth of the Harp River is near the capital, Chathold.[12]
Administrative divisions
[edit | edit source]People
[edit | edit source]Population and demographics
[edit | edit source]The human citizen population in 576 CY are of mixed Oeridian and Suel heritage. There are few demihumans or humanoids.[13] The southern portion of the Flinty Hills is populated by numerous haflings, some of which would fall within Almor's borders.[10]
The peoples are mainly farmers, herdsmen and fisherfolk, with some foresters in the far north.[1]
The realm is Neutral Good, Neutral, and Chaotic Good.[14]
Religion
[edit | edit source]Notable individuals
[edit | edit source]Notable individuals in or from Almor included:
- Xanther Klimstyn, Prelate of Almor,
- Kevont, the Prelate of Almor.
- Commandeer Osson, in charge of Almorian military forces during the Greyhawk Wars. See also: Osson's Charge).
- Duke Szeffrin of the Great Kingdom.
Government
[edit | edit source]In 576 CY, Prelate Xanther Klimstyn (human) is the leader of the Prelacy of Almor. They work together as allies with Nyrond to ensure that the Great Kingdom is forced to fight an long, ongoing, expensive war, little worth the cost.[15]
In earlier sources, the head of state in 576 CY is Prelate Kevont, to whom the various petty nobles and the Lord Mayor of the town of Innspa swore allegiance. The reigning prelate is usually a high priest. The state is only loosely organized, but had a strong spirit of freedom and justice based upon religious precepts.[1]
Heraldry
[edit | edit source]Economy
[edit | edit source]Resources
[edit | edit source]In 576 CY, Almor's resources are mainly foodstuffs, cloth and copper.[16]
The southern Flinty Hills within Almor's borders are well endowed with minerals.[10]
Trade
[edit | edit source]The Harp River is navigable for half its length, and for much of the part that fell within Almor.[12]
Ships upon Relmor Bay in 576 CY are carrying on trade between Almor, Nyrond and Onnwal. These would often be preyed on by the Ahlissan squadron based on Prymp.[17]
Travel
[edit | edit source]Travel via sea would occur via Relmor Bay, usually to Nyrond and Onnwal.[17]
Military
[edit | edit source]Land forces
[edit | edit source]In 576 CY standing military numbers around 5,000 total cavalry and footmen, plus the nobility and gentry. Militia contingents bear crossbows, spears, or polearms (most commonly fauchard or glaive), with northern contingents usually bearing longbows or battleaxes. The Prelacy at the time is strongly supported by Nyrond as a buffer against the Great Kingdom, and it pays a stipend to help support Almor's standing army.[1] Strong garrisons of Nyrond troops are stationed in strategic positions within Nyrond to move to the aid of Almor (or the Pale) if needed.[3]
Brigands and bandits in Almor are not locally based, and usually raiding from the Great Kingdom.[18]
In 578 CY military forces from western Nyrond have mustered around Oldred, readying for a joint Nyrond-Almor attack on the Great Kingdom. The force is under the joint command of Admiral Auriel Lexis (Nyrond) and Counter Stephen Bulhart (presumably Almor). It is listed as comprising:
- 13 warships
- 8 large galleys
- 57 transports
- 1,000 Nyrondian marines
- 400 light cavalry
- 1,000 heavy foot
- 2,500 medium foot
- 3,700 levies
The forces are mainly volunteers, with many minor commanders and adventurer types present.[19][note 1]
Knightly orders
[edit | edit source]Members of the Knight Protectors of the Great Kingdom are stationed in Almor prior to the Greyhawk Wars. With the fall of Almor, the survivors moved to Rel Deven or Sunndi, or sought to hide out in the Grandwood and the Adri Forest.[20]
Relationships
[edit | edit source]Enemies
[edit | edit source]Almor throughout its history is under threat of invasion from the Great Kingdom, and ultimately destroyed by it.
Allies
[edit | edit source]Almor is allied to Nyrond and the Iron League throughout its history.
In Living Greyhawk
[edit | edit source]The Duchy of Almor is dealt with as part of the Nyrond region. Innspa and the Adri Forest, as part of the North Kingdom is a separate region unto itself. Ahlissa held old Almor south of the Harp River but did not have a dedicated region (being dealt win in Core adventures).
