Kruknik is a hamlet in the Duchy of Urnst near the Cairn Hills.[1][2][3]

Description

[edit source]

Kruknik is a small hamlet that is used as a stopping point for merchants.[4] Outside the hamlet, there are several farms, a mill, and homes

Notable locations

[edit source]

While perhaps not notable in a larger city, there are only a few merchants and tradesmen who have chosen to make their living and homes here.

Berebul's Mining Supplies sells mining equipment and tools for prospecting and excavation. Berebul (NG male half-orc Com2)bul has made a comfortable living supplying the miners of Kruknik, and while he is only tolerated by many townsfolk, he causes no trouble and conducts his business fairly, he is always open for haggling and bartering. He maintains a good relationship with Naira, who often brings him food so he does not have to venture into public as often.[5]

The Fifth Chance and stable, owned by House Einstoffen, is the only inn in town and serves as the primary gathering place for townsfolk and guards alike, who come to drink, gamble, and socialize. The bar is tended by Ahndjia Klopak (LN female human Exp3), who is typically friendly and welcoming and often provides light entertainment for the patrons. Practical touches reflect the inn’s everyday use: a coatrack stands by the front door above a wooden grate, and a wide shelf before the hearth is set aside for drying boots and socks during rainy weather.[6]

Hammer and Forge is run by Master Smith Faustein (male human), a human craftsman, with the help of his wife Greka and his apprentice, Derni (NG male human Com1), a good-natured human commoner. Notably, it is the only shop in the hamlet not named after a person.[7]

Igna's Pastries is not actually run by Igna (female human) herself, but by her husband, Grikr (male human). While Grikr handles the counter and business, it is Igna who does all of the baking, and her skill is the real reason the shop bears her name. Grikr is relentlessly eager to make a sale and will use any tactic within his power to convince customers to buy something, anything. before they leave.[8]

Phthemia's General Store was once owned by Phthemia, who passed away several years ago. The shop is now run by her granddaughter, Naria (LN female human Com1), who provides typical household provisions as well as riding horses, and tack and harnesses. Naria is a very pretty and kind young woman, though not especially bright.[9]

Ruedrik's Clothing Shop is owned and operated by Ruedrik (male human), a plump and arrogant tailor who runs his business with an eye firmly on profit. He is openly snide toward anyone he believes cannot enrich him and is notorious for charging outrageous prices, particularly for clothing suited to cold or rainy weather.[9]

Government

[edit source]

Sherrif Garnick Kollbein (LG male human Ftr4), perhaps surprisingly, is a man more than willing to talk with anyone who passes through. Life in the hamlet is usually quiet, often painfully so, which leaves the sheriff with little to occupy his time beyond conversation and observation. Despite this, Garnik harbors a deep suspicion of Berebul, largely due to the fact that he is a half-orc.[8]

History

[edit source]

From 589 CY to 591 CY, Kruknik's wagons were being raided Goblin in the area. The attacks escalated after the goblins acquired a wand of sleep but fortunately a group of adventures put an end to them; making the trade route more secure.

Lady Czutaz Urlirel, a lich who was entombed not far from Kruknik, was unwittingly released by Isgoth Einstoffen in 593 CY.[10][11][12]
