Character creation
[edit source]- Options are limited to those available in the Players Handbook (2024) and DnDBeyond Basic Rules (2024)[note 1] Other new sources made be permitted as they are published; previous fifth edition sources are not permitted.[1] Optional rules from the DMG (e.g. custom backgrounds) are not permitted for character creation.
- Ability scores are generated using either the "standard array" or "point cost" methods.[1][4]
- Evil alignments are not allowed.[1] "D&D assumes that player characters aren’t of an evil alignment."[5]
- All characters begin at level 1.[1]
- Characters may begin with a "trinket" from the PH2024 Trinkets table.[2][6]
- According to the Player's Handbook, characters choose starting equipment from the background and class, that includes the choice to take gold pieces instead of the fixed equipment. At this stage you can buy equipment from chapter 6 of the PHB.[6] That includes the common magic items listed as Adventuring Gear: Potion of Healing, Spell Scroll of a Cantrip or Spell Scroll of a Level 1.[7]
On 24 July 2025, a week before the campaign debut at GenCon, WotC released the first the Living Greyhawk Guide v0.5 beta. It covers character creation, and is a single page with a second page which includes an FAQ.[1][8]

Advancement

The system by which player characters advanced levels is based upon number of sessions played, rather than exact XP (as is common in organized play).
The Living Greyhawk Guide v0.5 beta raised the number of adventures required to go up in level. The PC's level becomes the number of adventures required to gain the next level. One adventure to get to level 2, two more to level 3, three more to level 4, and four more to level 5—for a total of ten adventures to reach level 5. All levels beyond that are four adventures to gain the next level.[1]
In the early previews, one session played got a PC to 2nd level, a second session got a PC to 3rd, five total sessions earned fourth level, and eight total achieved fifth. The precise number of sessions per levels, however, changed via feedback from the playing community after the previews, requiring ten total adventures to reach level 5.[9][10]
- Declining advancement
When the adventure is over, each player choose if they would want the game to count as an advancement towards leveling. If they choose not to take the advancement, then they earn no gold or magical items, though they may keep Marks of Prestige.[10][11]
Additional Sources
[edit source]The campaign offers other options from sourcebooks, on a limited basis, and "new sources may be added" as the Legends of Greyhawk Guide is updated.
In addition to those found in the Player's Handbook (2024), the following are permitted for use in the campaign:[12]
- Classes
In the grand tradition of magical artificers in Greyhawk, like Lum the Mad and Kwalish, and the lost technologies of the Barrier Peaks and City of the Gods, in the Legends of Greyhawk campaign, the artificer class is permitted.[13][14]
- Subclasses
Some guidance about how to use these subclasses has been offered for the Highfolk region:[15]
- College of the Moon (Bard)
- Knowledge Domain (Cleric)
- Banneret (Fighter)
- Oath of the Noble Genies (Paladin)
- Winter Walker (Ranger)
- Bladesinger (Wizard)
Also, two subclasses for the artificer are permitted.[12] Some guidance about how to use these subclasses has been offered for the campaign.[16]
- Alchemist
- Cartographer
- Spells
- Homunculus Servant
Magic
[edit source]The number of magical items a character can have is limited based on rarity and level of the character. At the first tier of play the character can have up to five common magical items but only one of higher rarity (uncommon or rare). [17]
During the game the party can encounter all kind of wondrous things that they might use during the adventure, regardless of the limit. When the adventure is over, each player choose between three sets of rewards for the character:[18]
- "*Featured Magic Item*" A specific magical item specific for the adventure, but no gold.
- "*Gold and Riches*" A big part of the treasure in gold.
- "*Luck of the Dice*" A random magical item rolled from a predetermined list, together with a small part of the treasure in gold.
If the rewarded item exceeds the limit for the level of the character after the game,[19] then items must be discarded down to the limit. [11]
Organizations
[edit source]There will be organizations from officially published sources available for player characters to join, e.g. Knights of the Hart.[20]
