The Bandit Kingdoms is a political state in the Central Flanaess properly known as the Combination of Free Lords, and sometimes called the Bandit Lands (post-Greyhawk Wars).

History

[edit | edit source]

This area was settled, if not very well, by Oeridians as they pushed eastward to become the Great Kingdom of the Aerdi.[1][2] It was never very tightly held, and when the Viceroyalty of Ferrond (to the west) revolted against the Great Kingdom in 254 CY to become the Kingdom of Furyondy, the area between Furyondy and the Great Kingdom (to the east) fell under control of local petty nobles[2]. These "Middle Lands" included "plains north of the Nyr Dyv" and once spread as far west as the Veng River,[2] and as far east as across the Zumker River to the Griffs, in the valley of the Zumkend River and Calbut.[3] Eventually this name faded so that only the central-most domain is referred to as the "Midlands".

At some point in the first half of the fourth century CY prior to 350 CY,[4][5] the barons in the northern part of the area united the as the "Combination of Free Lords", an alliance to stop outside invasions through a mutual defense pact, though this did not stop them from warring or raiding internally.[2]

Also in the early fourth century CY, the lords to the south of the Middle Lands nearest the Nyr Dyv's coast, previously part of Ferrond, formed the Shield Lands to stop raids from the Free Lords.[2] The two battled each other for more than two centuries, without change.[2]

But, in the late fifth century CY, at some point between 480 CY and 499 CY,[6] when Iuz was rising to power, he "conquered the westernmost Bandit Kingdoms, declaring the walled city of Molag his 'Summer Capital.'"[6]

Then, in the early sixth century CY (513 CY), shortly after Iuz's disappearance, the Horned Society broke away from the Empire, and took Molag and the surrounding lands as their own.[6] Even after Iuz's return (570 CY)[7] and his destruction of the Hierarchs, the region did not return fully to the hands of the Free Lords.

In 579 CY, Wormhall and Warfields are invaded by the Horned Society in retribution for the forces of the Free Lords collectively turning to attack Tenh for violating the borders of the Bandit Kingdoms and attacking Grosskopf. After a truce is negotiated with Tenh, the Free Lords turn to retake the western domains in spring 576.[8]

After successfully pushing the Horned Society back, the Heirarchs cooperate with Wormhall and Warfields to invade the western Shield Lands, only to themselves then be defeated by the Empire of Iuz in 583 CY, who then invades and occupies all of the old Bandit Kingdoms.[9][10]

By the late sixth century CY (591 CY+), the Bandit Kingdoms remain under Iuz's control, though his power is weaker there than at home. Many people in the region work against the Empire and do their best to "regain their independence."[11]

Geography

[edit | edit source]

The Bandit Kingdoms are in the central portion of the Flanaess. They are bordered by the Fellreev Forest to the north, and by an undefined border with the Shield Lands to the south. To the west, the Ritensa River divides the Kingdoms from the Empire of Iuz proper, while the Artonsamay River forms the eastern border, starting in the Fellreev, and arching through the Phostwood before passing between the Shield Lands and the County of Urnst.

In the heart of the Bandit Kingdoms lies the vast Rift Canyon, more than 180 miles long and up to thirty miles wide. Formed by forces unknown, it is surrounded by a rocky wasteland. Near the southwest end of the canyon rises White Plume Mountain, a volcano whose tunnels until recently housed the evil wizard Keraptis. And to the north of the canyon lie the Tangles, a small, yet dense forest where bandits opposed to Iuz's force reside.

People

[edit | edit source]

Population

[edit | edit source]

In 576 CY, the population of the Bandit Kingdoms totals 95,000+.[5][12]

In 591 CY, the population of the Bandit Kingdoms totals 475,200. The most populous towns are Rookroost (pop. 17,500), Stoink (pop. 13,300), Kinemeet (pop. 7,300, though orcs outnumber humans over 2-to-1), Riftcrag (pop. 5,000), and Alhaster (pop. 4,700).[1]

Languages

[edit | edit source]

The most widely-spoken languages in the Bandit Kingdoms include Common, Orcish, and Halfling.[1]

Government

[edit | edit source]

There is no one central government within the Bandit Kingdoms; most of the territories are petty dictatorships whose alliances can shift as quickly as the wind. There are seventeen distinct domains (in 576 CY+)[4][5][8] and leadership of the region is mostly by "four to six powerful lords, with the rest attempting either to become leading rulers or simply to survive."[4][5][13] There aren't any of the lords who are powerful enough to rule the entire region, or to draw them all together into a single nation. But even though they are independent petty lords separately, they band together in self-defense against any outside forces.[5]

From 584 CY forward, the various warlords, in theory, all pay homage to Iuz and his forces, since these lands were claimed by Iuz as his own during the Greyhawk Wars. However, for most of the Bandit Kings, this fealty is a charade. In the late sixth century CY (591 CY+), they are sometimes called the Bandit Lands. They are an occupied land, there is no official national capital. Hallorn, Riftcrag, Rookroost, and Stoink function as "regional capitals".

Administrative divisions

[edit | edit source]

These are more independent realms than they are administrative divisions of a nation. Each is its own sole authority. They cooperate with each other for defense and trade, but they have no single formal government.

Much like the real-world balkanization of some areas after the fall of an empire, some of these domains are only the approximate size of Delaware and New Jersey.

Listed below are the realms of the Bandit Kingdoms (576-581 CY); Key numbers correlate to those in the map at right.

[Note that honorifics and descriptors to these realms' names (such as "free city", "unified bands", "grand theocracy", et al.) are not added until 2000.[14] In 1981 when they are first enumerated, only the realm name is used, though some rulers use titles like baron, earl, prince, or king.][3][8]

Heraldry

[edit | edit source]

Due to the independent nature of the various groups within the Bandit Kingdoms, no one standard has ever been adopted as representative of the entire region. However, several of the fiefs considered amongst the largest and strongest traditionally carry their own devices, including Dimre, Johrase, Reyhu, Rookroost.

Notable individuals

[edit | edit source]

The various warlords of the Bandit Kingdoms aren't enumerated in 576 CY—it is not until spring 579 CY they are detailed.[3][8] It is generally presumed they were the same prior to that.

Economy

[edit | edit source]

Resources

[edit | edit source]

The Bandit Kingdoms have little in the way of natural resources, though a fair amount of silver is produced from mining operations in the Rift Canyon.[15][16]

Currency

[edit | edit source]

The Bandit Kingdoms do not maintain any standard coinage of their own, though individual fiefs within the Kingdoms will produce their own currencies (or will use coins looted from nearby nations).

In Legends of Greyhawk

[edit | edit source]

The Bandit Kingdoms[17] will premiere as part of the Legends of Greyhawk organized play campaign in March 2026. It will be run by Premier Organizer West Coast Adventurers Guild, owned and operated by Wolf Miller (Hallowed Woods, LLC). The Lead Story Designer is Mike Olson.[18]. Casey Brown, author of The Unofficial Living Greyhawk Bandit Kingdoms Summary (2016), is a consultant for the region.[17]

In Living Greyhawk

[edit | edit source]

In the Living Greyhawk organized play scenarios, the Bandit Kingdoms region was assigned to players in the real-world US states of Texas and Oklahoma. The Bandit Kingdoms triad produced a large amount of content, producing almost 19 "rounds" (four-hour sessions) of content per year, well in excess of Wizards of the Coast's initial goal of 8 rounds per year, which was not reached by all regions.

Casey Brown authored a 92-page book, BDKR1 Unofficial LG Bandit Kingdoms Summary (April 2012), to sum up the eight years of adventures in the Living Greyhawk Bandit Kingdoms region.
